Hundreds of Gauteng streetlights repaired in safety drive
Almost 500 streetlights were repaired during ongoing maintenance, with upgrades aimed at improving safety, reducing vandalism and keeping roads well lit across the province.
More than 470 streetlights across Gauteng have recently been repaired by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, with some of the work carried out in the Mogale City area.
According to the department’s head of communications, Melitah Madiba, contractors have been conducting maintenance and repairs along provincial roads over the past month.
She said roads in the West Rand will also be prioritised in the new financial year.

Madiba added that the department is exploring alternative technologies – including solar-powered lighting, energy-saving controllers and bare aluminium conductors with low scrap value – to help curb vandalism and theft.
Streetlight maintenance and repairs form part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s #TacklingG13 initiative, which focuses on safety, infrastructure maintenance, protection and crime reduction.
Madiba said the initiative also addresses non-functioning streetlights, which pose safety and security risks due to cable theft, illegal connections and traffic-related damage.
Maintenance teams will continue repairing affected streetlights in the coming weeks.
Motorists are urged to report theft or vandalism of streetlights, traffic signals or cables by calling 0800 10111 or visiting their nearest police station.
