Shining a light on citizens living with disabilities

Community members created a safe space for disabled members to commemorate Human Rights Day recently.

The Living Colour Disabled Awareness campaign was launched in the Chief Mogale Community Hall recently to celebrate Human Rights Day and shine a light on citizens living with disabilities.

The campaign was launched by Katlego Mhlaba. She saw the stigma and discrimination that people with disabilities have had to endure in the community so she took it upon herself to give the disabled members of the community a safe space to come together and teach other community members that despite their physical setbacks, they are just as human as everyone else.

Many of the disabled community members were highly appreciative of the event as they got a chance to meet one another and find common ground with other members of the community who had empathy for them.

“This campaign will open the eyes of families and friends of disabled people, that their loved ones are humans and should not be ashamed or fear judgement from the public about their disabled family members,” Katlego said.

During the event, Katlego also explained in detail what his organisation aimed to do in future, what they stand for and how it will raise awareness not just in their community but also in the West Rand at large.
