Women of Golden Age make a difference

The Rotary Anns of the Golden Age Retirement Village hopes to get as much as help as possible in their quest to make a difference.

The elderly women of the Golden Age Village might spend most of their time at the retirement home but even in their old age they continue to make a difference in the community.

While they initially kept themselves busy by knitting blankets and beanies they soon took it upon themselves to use their skill to reach out to the needy. They do this by knitting blankets, sweaters, socks, and stuffed teddy bears which they donate to people of all age groups who are very vulnerable in the community.

The Golden Age Retirement Village is part of the Rotary Club of Krugersdorp and Krugersdorp Rotary Anns. Both these organisations offer accommodation for the elderly who have been at the center of this initiative to make a big difference in the community in the most heartfelt way.

Many of them may be pensioners who have retired but they are very much in their golden years as they sought out to help those in need in the community. The Rotary Anns look after the well-being of the residents of the Golden Age Village as well as the community. What used to be a hobby for the ladies has turned into a passion to give help those in need.

Hilda Mckenzie, Janie Venter and Shriely Mels are three the knitting ladies who earned praise for their efforts.

“We can never do it for ourselves and by ourselves. The community assists us and then we give back in a way only we can, knitting,” said Hannietjie van der Walt who is one of the Rotary Anns.
