A landmark year for Lettie Fouché Ladies Club
Founded in 1973, the Lettie Fouché Ladies Club, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary at Usambara with Gatsby as the theme.
The Lettie Fouché Ladies Club is a social club where women gather at the Usambara Lodge monthly to make new friends, share ideas, and make memories.
On Thursday, May 11 the club reached a landmark, although a historically rich institution already, by celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The club was founded in 1973 by three women, Lettie Fouché the wife of former South African president Jim Fouche, Maryke de Klerk, wife of the late former president of South Africa FW De Klerk and respected academic and literary critic Elize Botha. For 50 years the club has been a safe space for women to come together and make new friends, share ideas and knowledge with each other, and bond with one another. The club also has various programmes to make a difference in the community, such as charities that involve clothing give away, food programmes, and blanket drives.

The theme for the 50-year celebrations was Gatsby where they were all dressed in their lavish costumes and spoiled with delicious food, desserts, and wine not to mention some fun games including bingo.

The club hopes to open its doors to more women who will have the chance to create more memories and write more about the club’s already rich history.
