More than just a drug youth campaign

Department of Health held a Youth Day Seminar to address issues faced by the youth.

The West Rand Health District hosted several events in Mogale City in commemoration of Youth Day.

On June 16 the district held a Youth Seminar at Luipaardsvlei Clinic addressing issues faced by young people and giving them advice on how they can overcome their obstacles.

The stakeholders who made the event possible were various community policing forums, West Rand District Crime Prevention wardens and SAPS. The main topic of discussion by the speakers was drug addiction, sexual assault, education and youth unemployment.

There were about 50 young people who attended the event on what was a fruitful day where they can educate themselves on the important role they play. The main speakers at the event were Sergeant Patricia Tshifularo, Luipardvlei Clinic chairperson George Moloi and Clinic Health promoter Keatlaretse Mtuse.

George highlighted the importance of education and employment and how it empowers the youth to be better citizens of the country.

“Education is a tool that will empower the youth like nothing else, they must read and improve their skills.”

Sergeant Patricia highlighted how unemployment and crime can have a huge negative impact on young people. She discussed how SAPS engages in many school safety programmes to ensure that young people do not find themselves on the wrong side of the law. She encouraged the young audience to also play their role in crime prevention by reporting to the police and not being consumed by peer pressure.

The event concluded with the Luipardsvlei Clinic committee members addressing parents and ensuring them that public services such as the police and youth programmes are there to support them in their time of need.
