Muldersdrift women learn how to start their own beauty business

From hair to make-up, the women from Muldersdrift and Kromraai recently learnt the ins and outs of starting their own beauty business.

The Umnotho For Empowerment Village, a NPO, recently hosted an entrepreneurship day with a beauty twist for the women from the community. The event equipped the women to now start their own thriving businesses in the name of love and passion in the beauty industry.

It was offered as one of the community outreach programmes that Umnotho offers in association with the Department of Social Development. At least 40 women from Muldersdrift and Rietfontein as well as Kromdraai attended the programme that Ayamah Lashes presented.

Ayamah Lashes is an eyelash extension salon that also offers training and was founded in 2020.

Mary Mokete and Violet Vries want to be nail technicians.

Umnotho means wealth and economy and they believe communities can achieve empowerment by working together to build their own wealth. They have been encouraging community empowerment since 2009. They want to teach low-income households how to unite into a community that will pull their resources together to buy land for housing and business opportunities to make a sustainable livelihood for themselves.

Sharron Ries, the organisation’s resource mobilisation manager, said with the workshop they wanted to teach interested women what is needed to start their own business. This was done as part of their Women’s Month initiatives.

The women were between the ages of 18 and 35 years old and Palesa Mok, the organisation’s advice desk operator in Kromdraai, explained that they try to align programmes like these with important dates on the calendar. Although they do have daily youth programmes that also run within the organisation. One of these is barista and waiter training, which is especially valuable in the Muldersdrift area where hospitality is a big industry.

Lerat Chauke wants to do beauty therapy and Precious Letsoalo wants to do hairdressing and makeup while Thato Chauke wants to start a make-up studio.

Zanele Midikwe and her sister Segafatso told the Krugersdorp News they want to open a salon together. Beauty is especially Zanlele’s passion and at home she constantly attempts to learn more about beauty.

Lindiwe Maemee is already a make-up artist and said she sees clients at home. She went to the workshop to learn how to expand her client base while Asemohle Klaas said she watches YouTube videos to hone her skills.
