Artistic skills aplenty portrayed in Kagiso

The youth and residents of Kagiso recently showed off their artistic skills.

An art exhibition recently hosted by Backyard Art Gallery in Kagiso Avenue created big excitement.

It was considered the highlight of the week for many youth and residents who took part in a very educational workshop. It was also an opportunity to observe the amazing paintings and artwork of local artists.

The purpose of the event was to raise awareness and educate the youth about traditional African art. The event was made possible by Net99, Kagiso Tourism Association, House of Down, Kulfood Art Project and Backyard Art Gallery who were among the stakeholders for the exhibition.

According to the organiser and marketer of the event, Kgosi Khumalo, the exhibition goes beyond just developing skills but encourages the youth to go into the art space. The exhibition also hopes to send a message to the youth to be productive instead of hanging around in the streets where one can easily fall into the trap of gang pressure, substance abuse and even criminal activities.

“This was not only an exhibition for local artists to showcase their work but to also encourage the local youth to focus on their dreams and aspirations instead of being consumed by drugs and alcohol,” Khumalo said.

Khumalo further expressed his excitement for the workshop to grow in the future and was extremely proud of the overwhelming support they received.

”The support was amazing and clearly, we need these events because they have a positive impact in young people’s lives. We are just happy to see them taking part.”
