Municipality forms major partnership to tackle waste

A new partnership between Mogale City, a major e-waste organisation and the government hopes to have a shared commitment to managing the environmental impact of waste within communities.

Mogale City’s Integrated Environmental Management Division has taken a significant step in prioritising the well-being of the environment by announcing an official partnership with the EPR Waste Association of South Africa (eWASA).

The news comes after a recent fire outbreak that occurred at the Luipaardsvlei landfill site which has been a major talking point.

According to Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) communication officer Kgothasto Molathlegi, the partnership hopes to have a shared commitment to managing the environmental impact of waste and promoting sustainable methods within communities.

“This will also promote entrepreneurship in the recycling economy in addition to creating jobs and generating opportunities that uplift the youth, women, and individuals living with disabilities in the waste management sector.

“eWASA handed over 40 recycling containers alongside personal protective equipment, bulk bags and waste picker trolleys to the Waste Management Division. These resources will enhance the work of waste reclaimers and Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises in collaboration with the municipality at landfill sites, effectively elevating recycling rates and lessening waste directed to landfills,” Molathlegi said.

The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, various E-Waste companies and Mogale City will also work closely together to ensure environmental safety.

According to eWASA’s official website, they are an organisation formed in 2008 to manage and sustain, an environmentally sound e-waste management system for the country. The organisation has been working with manufacturers, vendors, and distributors of electronic and electrical goods and e-waste handlers including refurbishes, dismantlers, and recyclers to effectively manage e-waste, lighting, and paper and packaging waste.
