Silverstar supports Cansa and breast cancer

The Power of Pink drive at Silverstar ensured that the casino could donate R50 000 to Cansa.

Cansa was the most recent recipient of Silverstar’s charity when they received R50 000 to support the work they do.

At the beginning of October, Silverstar launched its Pink Power charitable gaming promotion. By playing slots and tables players could win a share of R100 000 in cash prizes. Tickets could be won at the slots and tables and then entered into the draw. For every ticket entered the casino donated R10 to Cansa.

They had three draws for the cash prizes, one at the end of October, one in the middle of November, and the last one on November 26 where they also handed a cheque for R50 000 to Cansa.

Ryan Nicholas, General Manager of Silverstar, explained to the Krugersdorp News that while working at a previous casino, one of their staff members was diagnosed with breast cancer. To support her and the cause they then started a similar project. When he moved to Silverstar in the middle of 2023 he wanted to continue this charitable endeavour. This will be a yearly promotion from now on.

The cause lies close to Ryan’s heart as he also has a family member who had to fight cancer.

“Cancer affects so many people in the community, not only those fighting but also their family. Everyone has their own reason for supporting this initiative and it is always good to give back to our community,” he explained.

Corrien Roro from Cansa could not believe her ears when she heard they were receiving R50 000 and explained that this money would be used for a number of their project. Some of it will go toward their Care Home drive, which essentially is a home away from home. Cancer patients can live there during the week while they get treatment. They have three delicious meals a day, nurses on staff, and even counsellors who talk to them and help them deal with what they are going through.

The money will also be used for their mobile clinics.

Corrien explained that many people living in rural areas can not get to doctors or afford to get testing done. Their mobile clinic reaches out to these communities and brings the testing to them for free.

Other projects include wellness days and research on how to better manage cancer through eating right.

Although this initiative focused on breast cancer information about other cancers is readily available on Cansa’s website. You can also contact their toll-free number on 0800 22 66 22.
