A day to remember for aspiring farmers
The Gauteng Farmers’ Market Day in Kagiso was an opportunity to support local farmers.
In a celebration of community, agriculture, and local entrepreneurship, the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment proudly held a Gauteng Farmers’ Market Day in Kagiso on February 10.
The market day aims to redefine the agricultural landscape, creating direct connections between smallholder farmers and the diverse consumers within the Townships, Informal Settlements and Hostels (Tish) communities.

According to Nkosana Mtolo, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment MEC Mbali Hlophe, “The Farmers’ Market Day initiative underscores the department’s commitment to supporting the smallholder Farmers Markets programme. By fostering these markets, the Department aims to unlock boundless opportunities for smallholder farmers, ensuring they reap the benefits directly from the consumers within their communities. The Farmers’ Market Day raises awareness among township consumers about the paramount importance of rallying behind local farmers and food hawkers.”

“More than just a market, Farmers’ Markets play a pivotal role in reshaping distribution channels and bridging social distances between urban and rural communities. By minimising intermediaries, the support extended by local community members directly to independent farmers becomes a catalyst for bolstering local economic prospects and promoting health and wellness in Tish communities.”
Throughout the day, residents would be seen engaging with local farmers and trying their produce.
