EMS and police educate youngsters about safety
Early childhood development (ECD) centres and nursery schools attended a safety awareness programme recently.

Community safety is a high priority for the city’s emergency services personnel and police.
More than 100 children from early childhood development (ECD) centres were invited to Chief Mogale Hall recently to attend a safety awareness programme that saw the Krugersdorp Fire Department, Mogale City’s Response Services and police engaging with youngsters.

According to the co-ordinator of the programme, David Selemongo the main aim of this initiative was to educate children on issues relating to safety, even bullying.
“The programme saw children of a younger demographic being taught how to identify crime in their neighbourhoods, bullying in school, and services available to them for when they need help. Parents and teachers were also briefly taught how to help children in school. Emergency drills were also part of the programme.

“Most of the time, as the community and parents, we tend to relax and not consider prevention methods until something happens. We then start to get frustrated but at that point, it is too late. The safety awareness campaign aims to give children wisdom to be able to fend for themselves in a situation of danger.

“Our children are not as naïve as we always describe them to be, they just need a little bit of guidance. As adults, we shouldn’t give up on them,” Selemongo said.
