Police officers educate elderly residents on crime, safety

Over 300 people, mostly the elderly, made their way to Chief Mogale Hall to be educated on crime and safety.

To ensure and prioritise the safety of elderly persons, the police held a safety awareness campaign in Kagiso.

About 300 people including two elderly established groups attended the campaign at Chief Mogale Hall.

Other stakeholders involved included Gauteng Community Safety, the police’s social crime prevention unit, local councillors, representatives from SASSA, community development workers, IEC officials, Rand West Traffic Department, health workers, GBV brigades, SAPS VFR, the local CPF chairperson, crime prevention Wardens and community safety patrollers.

“The aim was to empower the elderly people with information,” said Lieutenant Colonel George Mamohe.

Mahome further emphasised the police’s determination to protect the vulnerable.

“I will never allow a situation where an old person will walk to the police station on foot. A police vehicle will fetch the elderly from home and back after he/she has been helped.”

West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Sibiya also advised the elderly not to give their SASSA cards and ID documents to loan sharks.

“The session was informative and educational, with each stakeholder representative sharing safety tips and valuable information,” Sibiya concluded.
