Pilots race high in the Delporton sky

Local pilots enjoyed a day out high in the sky during the annual fun route at Krugersdorp Flying Club.

On May 11, the Krugersdorp Flying Club (KFC) held their third annual fun route.

The annual fun route is a race between the members of the flying club to help the pilots improve their skills and perhaps learn a new thing or two about how their planes work, perform and operate.

KFC chairperson Francois Tolmay said this was a joining circuit race where the pilots flew three laps, with a distance of 62km per lap, with landmarks like grain silos as an indication of how the route is laid out. There were 10 competitors with planes including an RV-7 and Lancair.

Dieter Bock, a member of the KFC, said that he reached a top speed of 175 Knots (324km/h) in his Lancair in a time of 00:13:03 for all three laps.

“The weather was excellent for flying and the turnout was great. The pilots flew neat and safe with everybody excited for the day,” concluded KFC official, Grant Rousseau.
