National Elections: Understanding the priorities of residents

Krugersdorp residents have their say about what should be a priority by the government in power following the national elections.

With the national elections less than a few weeks away and with several problems needing urgent attention in Mogale City, the Krugersdorp News reached out to residents who wish to have their say about what they feel should be prioritised.

From supporting small businesses to frail care centres and service delivery concerns, these residents come from various areas in town and are urging whoever is in power to pay urgent attention to the following.

Student Abby Johnson who recently matriculated expressed that whoever will be elected in the new government should pay attention to prioritising the well-being of the homeless and the elderly.

“I feel that more attention should be given to the homeless in Krugersdorp. Many of them do not have a place to live and have to endure poor conditions.”

Luan Johnson.

Luan Johnson expressed that businesses should also be assisted as the economy has a huge part to play in general.

“Businesses form part of the economy. It doesn’t matter how big or small it is, it creates employment which will mean the country will be able to compete.”

Kobus Garbers.

Manager at the Krugersdorp Council Care for the Aged, Kobus Garbers, feels that welfare services should be a priority as lack of funds and resources make it difficult to care for vulnerable people such as the elderly.

“Our frail centre caters to many elderly people. We provide services from sports programmes, such as active ageing programmes, and give food to fill up their stomachs. It has been difficult for our organisation and I think many others too since the budget reprioritisation by the Department of Social Development. I’m not talking about just the elderly but any civil society organisation assisting GBV victims or orphanages that are subsidised by the government. We deserve help.”

Ntombi Simane.

Ntombi Simane from Kagiso believes service delivery should be the number one priority.

“From roads to electricity and water, there seems to be something that we always complain about, so I believe that whoever is in power should make the living conditions better,” she said.

Nic van Riet.

Nic van Riet says the priority should be given attention to providing more funds to community organisations as he believes they have a role to play in improving the community.
