Kids honoured for reaching out to Tower of Life Men’s Shelter

The Tower of Life Men's Shelter in Krugersdorp recently received meals from a tutor centre in Roodepoort. Their acts have shown that a simple gesture can make anyone's day.

Swan Academy held a heartwarming ceremony in August to recognise the outstanding efforts of its learners who participated in a Mandela Day initiative.

The event celebrated the learners’ dedication to community service, particularly their involvement in providing meals to the Tower of Life Men’s Shelter, which is based in Krugersdorp.

According to one of the learners, Chemont Otto, giving soup to the homeless people at the shelter felt incredible, especially because the people appreciated it and were grateful for the little they had.

“It is important to give back to the community because every little bit counts, help is always appreciated and kindness costs nothing at all,” Chemont remarked.

A few learners stood up to encourage other learners to be loving and kind to others. The learners expressed that they have learned a lot from interacting with the people at the shelter and that they now understand their story better.

At the ceremony, the school’s marketing and events director, Pule Lemme, praised the students for their commitment and highlighted the importance of giving back.

“You have all made us incredibly proud,” he said. “Your efforts have not only provided much-needed assistance to those in our community but have also shown the power of unity and kindness.”

The learners were surprised by celebrity guest speaker Reggie Peace, who is a renowned actor. He motivated the learners to always show compassion to other people as they will never know the baggage that each one of them is carrying.

“People can take away your money, house, clothes, and all the physical things, but a good heart and personality can never be taken away from you,” Reggie said.

The learners were awarded certificates of appreciation, acknowledging their hard work and dedication.
