Fundraiser for children’s home CEO after thieves take hearing aids

Following a break-in and theft incident, the CEO of the Bethany House Trust's hearing aids were stolen. He now asks the community to raise funds for a replacement.

A recent break-in at Camp Courage, a relaxation facility for the children of Bethany House Trust, resulted in the CEO of the children’s home, Gert Jonker’s, hearing aids being stolen.

Jonker is the founder of the trust where the organisation renders specialised child protection and welfare services to about 140 000 vulnerable people annually.

Jonker lost his hearing after contracting Covid in 2021. He is dependent on hearing aids to function in his role as the CEO of the trust.

“I cannot hear without it, thus, not function professionally and unable to work. For example, if I have an important meeting with the legislature for social development or other high-level interactions with the state, I cannot hear and am functionally disabled,” Jonker said.

The replacement cost of two hearing aids and the directional microphone and TV link is R150 000.

A BackaBuddy fundraiser has since been launched for the replacement of Jonker’s hearing aids.

Jonker is asking the community for help to get the hearing aids he needs to continue serving society’s most vulnerable.
