Jonathan debunks the sting

Renowned scorpion and spider expert from the West Rand Jonathan Leeming presents innovative framework to reduce scorpion sting risks in Southern Africa.

The Oppenheimer Research Conference held in Midrand from October 6 to 9 brought together global experts to address pressing conversation issues.

Amid discussions on drones, artificial intelligence (AI), and climate change, Jonathan Leeming, a renowned scorpion and spider expert from the West Rand, presented a pivotal poster tackling the complexities of scorpion stings in Southern Africa.

Jonathan’s framework is derived from his book, Essential Scorpion Sting First Response, which focuses on how to minimise the risk of scorpion stings and how to ensure optimal outcomes for human and animal sting victims.

“Scorpion pose as a paradox. While some species can be deadly, they also support life-sustaining ecosystems. Understanding our values and beliefs about scorpions is crucial, as fear often perpetuates misinformation,” he said.

In collaboration with leading medical professionals, Jonathan is set on developing national scorpion sting management guidelines based on his research. These guidelines will empower medical professionals to provide informed care, ultimately benefiting everyone affected by scorpion stings in Southern Africa.
