Heroic police officer helps rescue unconscious driver

A police officer explains the role he played in assisting a woman who lost consciousness behind the wheel recently.

Recently, the Krugersdorp News reported on a harrowing scene as a woman, who had passed out behind the wheel, lost control of her vehicle, crashing into a street sign at the intersection of Fourth and Viljoen Streets.

What could have been a tragic outcome was averted thanks to the quick actions of Captain Motimedi Mokubane from the police’s local criminal record centre.

Mokubane, who was driving with his fleet manager, Abel Moswete, on their way back to the office from Munsieville, noticed the woman’s car slowing down unusually.

“Abel and I were chatting casually when we spotted the vehicle at the intersection. Suddenly, it started swerving dangerously, hitting dustbins and veering into traffic before it finally collided with a signpost,” Mokubane recalled.

“I told Abel, ‘She’s in serious trouble’.”

Without a moment’s hesitation, Mokubane sprang into action.

The driver of car crashed into the pole.

“I rushed over to her car, trying to get her attention, but she was completely unresponsive,” he explained.

Locked inside the vehicle, the woman remained unconscious as Mokubane banged on the windows, hoping to wake her. Realising the urgency of the situation, he immediately called emergency medical services (EMS), who arrived within minutes.

While EMS prepared to break the window and administer aid, Mokubane ran the vehicle’s license plate to locate her next of kin. His swift response helped bring her husband to the scene just in time.

Thanks to the rapid intervention of EMS, the woman regained consciousness after receiving an intravenous drip and was taken to the hospital for further care.

Mokubane’s alertness and compassion turned a frightening situation into one of hope and relief. His heroism reminds us that a single act of bravery can make all the difference.
