Take actionable steps within your homes and communities – govt at 16 Days of Activism launch

The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign kicked off and the Gauteng Provincial Legislature urges citizens to take actionable steps within their homes and communities.

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature has officially launched the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

Under the powerful theme, It Begins With Me, End Violence for a Safer Gauteng, the event brought together government leaders, civil society and interfaith organisations among others.

Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Morakane Mosupyoe, said this unified gathering exemplified the collective commitment to eradicating gender-based violence (GBV) in Gauteng.

Mosupyoe delivered a compelling address, emphasising personal accountability and community-driven change as the foundation of a violence-free society. Participants were also encouraged to reflect on their roles in fostering environments of respect, equality, and non-violence, inspiring attendees to take actionable steps within their homes and communities.

The event was further enriched by moving interfaith prayers, and youth-led therapeutic monologue sessions.

These elements highlighted the importance of holistic approaches in addressing the root causes of GBV and supporting survivors. Key stakeholders reaffirmed their dedication to creating safer homes, streets and public spaces.

“The campaign launch serves not only as a call to action but also as a platform for partnerships aimed at strengthening justice systems, enhancing victim support services, and promoting educational initiatives for the next generation.

“As the 16 Days of Activism continue, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature invites all citizens to sustain the momentum of this campaign. Together, let us transform this movement into a year-round commitment to peace, respect, and equality, ensuring a Gauteng where everyone can live free from fear and violence.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants, sponsors and stakeholders who contributed to the success of this critical initiative. Together, change begins with us.”
