Donate and save a child this festive season

As the festive season approaches, local NPO Save A Child tells their story and asks the community for their support.

The Save a Child (SAC) NPO is known for its major outreach projects across the country.

“Our main focus is to provide diapers to children who suffer from cerebral palsy, however, sometimes we pay children’s medical bills if their families cannot afford it. We have even provided a wheelchair and a back brace for some children,” said the chairperson of SAC, Boet Jonk.

The organisation is situated in the Krugersdorp CBD, with Boet taking over in 2000. He continued to say that during the Covid period, they sadly lost a lot of children and even sponsors for donations – something they are still recovering from. Their journey over the past several years has also not been easy as he mentioned they stood at the brink of bankruptcy. He then paid out of his own pocket to keep them afloat and after three months since he took over, they had around 11 children for who they provided diapers.

But he is proud to announce that things are improving, yet they will need every bit of help they can to make it through the festive season.

Boet said currently, they provide diapers for around 60 children and around 20 older people across the entire country where they have the diapers couriered to them. Explaining how big the need is for diapers, Boet said one person requires about three crates of diapers every three months.

“To provide our beneficiaries with these diapers it costs anywhere between R60 000 and R80 000 per month. We even had months where it went up to R150 000,” Boet explained.

He continued that their biggest struggle is to provide diapers for their beneficiaries and to get funds as they almost completely rely on donations from the public. They also have a charity shop (shop number 5) on the corner of Human and Burger Street where residents can donate any unused items,

Boet is asking the community for their support, be it financially or the donation of diapers. If you want to make a difference, contact Boet on 072 345 9661 or go to their offices.
