Airsoft team goes for gold despite Middle East conflict
Despite conflict in the Middle East, a Noordheuwel tactical airsoft team is preparing to represent South Africa at the World Airsoft Games in Abu Dhabi.
A tactical airsoft team from Noordheuwel, Phantom SOG A, will face some of the world’s best teams at the World Airsoft Games later this month.
The tournament will take place from March 23 to 28 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. According to team leader Ray van Achterbergh, the team will compete against international opponents in a high-intensity competitive environment.

As previously reported by the Krugersdorp News, airsoft is a military simulation sport that uses high-powered airsoft guns that fire 6mm plastic BBs. The sport includes a variety of formats, ranging from casual social matches to structured competitive games.

Despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Van Achterbergh confirmed that the team will still travel to Abu Dhabi to take part in the event.
They will compete in tactical teams of five against opposing teams in various scenario-based missions. The champions will receive a cash prize of $30 000 USD.
“Teams with the highest scores move on to the next round until a winning team is crowned,” he said.
Van Achterbergh added that 16 teams from around the world will compete in the tournament. He also expressed gratitude to the sponsors and donors who helped make the trip possible.

“We are going there to win, but we are also grateful for the experience and the opportunity to learn, no matter where we place. We are extremely excited to represent South Africa. It’s a dream come true to compete on the world stage in a sport we love,” he concluded.
