VIDEO: About 1 000 march through Kagiso demanding action against illegal immigration

As protesters marched through Kagiso, one participant outlined the group's concerns over illegal immigration, employment and informal trading.

About 1 000 protesters marched through the streets of Kagiso on Tuesday, June 30, calling for stronger action against illegal immigration.

Many carried South African flags, while some were seen carrying sticks as they chanted slogans and made their way through various parts of the suburb. The demonstration remained largely peaceful throughout.

When the Krugersdorp News approached members of the crowd for comment, around 50 protesters declined to be interviewed.

However, one participant, Mxolisi Bhengu, agreed to explain the group’s concerns.

“We are fighting against illegal foreigners. We don’t want them working while many South Africans are unemployed. We also don’t want them operating in our taxi industry, and we want action to be taken regarding the spaza shops they are running,” said Bhengu.

Officials from Mogale City Public Safety and the police monitored the march to maintain public order.
