Children give back to Krugersdorp’s first responders on Mandela Day
#MandelaDay: From serving hot dogs to washing police vehicles, the children of Ikusasa Child and Youth Care Centre are showing that gratitude is best expressed through action.
With the spirit of Mandela Day in full swing, children from The Bethany House Trust’s Ikusasa Child and Youth Care Centre spent the day giving back to the community’s first responders.
According to centre manager Kingston Banda, the children handed out 120 hot dogs and cold drinks to private security officers, paramedics, firefighters, Mogale City Public Safety officers and members of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
“We have always been on the receiving end on Mandela Day, so this time we wanted to give back to our first responders,” he said.

Banda said it was the first time the centre had undertaken a Mandela Day initiative of this kind, adding that the experience had been rewarding for the children.
“The children are so excited to give back,” he said.
The children also helped clean the public ablution facilities across the street. On Saturday, July 18, they will wash police vehicles as part of their Mandela Day activities.
“We are the only child and youth care centre in the CBD, and we welcome all kinds of donations to help keep our operations running during these economically challenging times,” Banda concluded.
