Matric results day: Learners reminded their worth is more than marks

As matric results are released today, the Gauteng Department of Health urges learners to seek support if they feel overwhelmed or distressed.

As the Class of 2025 matric results are released today, January 13, the moment is one of celebration for some learners, while for others it may be an emotionally challenging time.

Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson Kealeboga Mohajane says this period can be particularly challenging for learners who did not pass or did not achieve the required results for their preferred higher education programmes.

“We remind learners that matric results do not define their worth or determine their future. Not achieving the desired outcome is a setback, but it is not the end of the road. Young people are urged not to make permanent decisions based on temporary circumstances and to seek help when they feel overwhelmed,” she said.

Mohajane encourages learners experiencing emotional distress, depression, or suicidal thoughts to access free mental health services available at clinics across the province. Where necessary, patients will be referred for further specialised mental health care.

She added that the department works closely with organisations that provide immediate emotional and suicide prevention support. Learners and families in need of assistance can contact the following toll-free support lines:

• Suicide Prevention Line: 0800 567 567
• Suicide Crisis Line: 0800 21 22 23 or 0800 12 13 14
• Hope Line: 0800 467 347 or 0800 611 197
• SMS: Send “Help” to 31393

“Communities are urged to offer support, listen without judgement, and encourage young people to speak openly about their feelings.”

The Gauteng Department of Health remains committed to ensuring access to mental health care and protecting the well-being of learners during this critical period, Mohajane concluded.
