West Rand learners compete in landmark Robotics competition

Curro Krugersdorp learners excel in the West Rand’s inaugural robotics showdown, showcasing creativity, skill and teamwork.

The school community marked an exciting milestone as Curro Krugersdorp successfully hosted the region’s first-ever Cluster Robotics Competition.

According to Jonathan Blom, Curro Krugersdorp Primary School teacher, Robotics Club member, and proud judge at last year’s World Robot Olympiad in Singapore, this is considered a landmark event that brought together 48 teams and 141 learners for a day celebrating innovation, engineering and collaborative problem-solving.

He added that participants from across the region competed in a series of robotics challenges designed to test creativity, resilience and technical skill.

The event was widely praised for elevating the standard of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) engagement in the area, positioning the West Rand as an emerging centre of robotics excellence,” he said.

Curro Krugersdorp’s Robotics teams delivered exceptional performances, securing:
• Junior Division: Second and third place
• Senior Division: First and second place

For Jonathan, these results reflect the dedication of the learners, the commitment of their coaches and the rapid advancement of Curro Krugersdorp’s robotics programme.

He further shared his excitement about the road ahead, saying he is looking forward to the growth of Robotics in the West Rand.

He added that the event received enthusiastic support from staff, parents and the broader community, all of whom contributed to the day’s success.

“With the first-ever competition now officially completed, momentum is building for even greater robotics involvement in the years ahead.

We have not only pioneered a new tradition but also set a strong foundation for the future of youth innovation in the West Rand,” he concluded.
