KHS learners dominate public speaking championships

Eight learners qualified for the national championships which will take place later this year.

Eight Krugersdorp High School (KHS) learners will represent the school at the South African Speech Association (SASA) Championships after delivering outstanding performances at the Gauteng Public Speaking Championships held at Trinityhouse Glenvista.

According to coaches Caitlin Swanevelder and Angela van Druten, KHS fielded a team of 33 learners at the championships, the largest contingent among the participating schools. All competitors took part in both the prepared and impromptu speech categories, with eight KHS learners achieving the highest grades in their respective divisions.

Babablwa Nobinda excelled at the event, placing third in the prepared speech category and winning the impromptu speech division. She was also named the overall Gauteng Public Speaking Champion.

Their results have secured qualification for the SASA Championships, which will take place in October.

Van Druten said the national competition is hosted by oratory organisations including Coach Itu Academy and the English-Speaking Union (ESU). Learners from across South Africa will compete for national honours and the opportunity to represent the country at the ESU International Public Speaking Competition in London in 2027.

Participation in the national championships also provides learners with an opportunity to earn national colours.
