Why is she still Minister of Education?

Thabile Mange writes:

I find it interesting that workers in South Africa retire at 65. Yet many of our parliamentarians are 65 and above. They mostly sleep and yawn in parliament instead of making a meaningful contribution. Old crocs?

But that’s a topic for another day.

Angie Motshekga has vast experience in education. Motshekga is a former college lecturer and ex-Gauteng MEC for Education. She is currently the Minister of Education. Yet she is making no difference in the department she is leading as a political head.

Right now, there is a call by various stakeholders (such as teacher unions) for schools to be closed immediately. The reason cited is the high rate of Covid-19 infections. This pose a threat to the precious lives of learners and educators.

Instead of responding and giving direction to the above call, Motshekga is dilly-dallying, playing the consultation game. As a matter of fact, she doesn’t need the unions to tell her that it is risky for learners and educators to go back to school.

It’s common sense.

Recently, President Cyril Ramaphosa admitted that it’s risky for learners to go back to school. Now why are schools still open?

Is the government waiting for the worst to happen before they can close schools?

Motshekga is one of the worst-performing cabinet ministers. She always play hide and seek when her leadership is desperately needed. Why is President Ramaphosa still keeping her as Minister of Education? We deserve better.
