LETTER: ‘Choosing sports over the homeless means we don’t care’

'I don't see how wanting to give children a place to play sports is more important than a homeless shelter'.

I find it good to want to restore the stadium but I refuse to support the idea of restoring it for sports vs making it a shelter for the homeless.

Krugersdorp has a huge number of homeless people. There have been many, many articles about this issue; specifically the recent ones about the shelter that closed down, and also October 1st’s article about the people’s food and belongings being destroyed.

Being blunt I don’t see how wanting to give children a place to play sports is more important than a homeless shelter.

Here are some human rights:

• Equality
• Human dignity
• Freedom and security of the person
• Housing
• Safe environments
• Healthcare, food, water and social security

None of the homeless populations of Krugersdorp has these rights met. We ignore the homeless. We purposely don’t acknowledge them. How can you say on the front page of a newspaper that helping the homeless was ‘considered’ but ‘other plans’ are going to happen instead?

A place for children to play sports is not a necessity.

I wonder if the DA and AfriForum are comfortable picking frivolous ideas over actual humanitarian acts that can literally stop people from living in terrible conditions. The only message it sends when choosing “sports” over “homeless shelter” is that we don’t care.

Go tell the homeless in Krugersdorp that they aren’t important enough to have basic human rights. Tell them that people who already have their needs met need more things while they, the homeless, do not matter.

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
