Out of the mouths of babes …

Compliments are special and we need them, but it is honesty that is the mark of true love and friendship.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

Recently, after a passionate sermon, a number of people thanked me and even complimented me on the message. It was then that the rug was pulled out from under my feet.

A young boy, just six years old, came up to me, gave me a hug and said, “Why did you preach so long?” Taken back and left speechless, I quickly replied, “Sorry, I will try to be shorter next time”.

The honesty of children is worth more than a thousand compliments. The incident reminded me of a Bible story. Jesus was busy when a group of mothers brought their little children for him to bless them. The disciples rebuked the women. But Jesus said something we must never forget. Holding the children in his arms he said, “To such as these belong the kingdom of God”. But it was another line in the story that is food for thought. Unless we become like little children, we will never see God’s kingdom.

That honesty and sincerity is what makes a child so special.

Compliments are special and we need them, but it is honesty that is the mark of true love and friendship.

Do you want the truth? Ask a child. Ray Merritt said, “Old men can make war, but it is children that make history”.
