Let your yes be yes and your no, no

Let us not be too harsh on the people who aspire to be leaders. Broken promises are universal.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

It is so exciting living in a democracy. We, the citizens, once every few years get a chance to influence the direction of our wonderful country.

But am I a bit too skeptical? We listen to all the candidates making speeches. Some are very passionate, some very eloquent. But experience teaches us that often after the elections are over, there is very little change. More of the same. But we exercise our right in our constitution by making an X on a ballot paper.

But let us not be too harsh on the people who aspire to be leaders. Broken promises are universal. Parents do at times break promises, spouses do and so do siblings. Friends also break promises. In fact, you and I may unintentionally also break promises and disappoint people who love us and trust us. In my 40 years as a minister, my 38 years with the Krugersdorp News doing this article, I must have disappointed some. But every day we all, by God’s grace, get up and keep trying.

The Bible says, “Let your yes be yes and your no, no”.

Maybe this article is a good reminder that we should be careful before we make a promise. Go out and vote, it is our duty.
