LETTER: ‘It’s time citizens reclaim their power back’

'Politicians have proven that they don't care about the masses' – resident.

• Thabile Mange writes:

There is lack of active citizenry in South Africa. Citizens have taken a backseat and allowed politicians to run the show. You can’t trust politicians with power. They need to be guarded. Therefore, citizens need to come to the party.

Politicians have mastered the art of manipulation. During elections, they treat voters as if they are the most important thing that has ever happened on planet earth. After elections, they vanish into thin air. They also behave as if they own the country. They don’t. But we allow them to do as they please. They loot our money and we watch and keep quiet. Yet we expect corruption to end. It won’t.

They have also wrecked our economy and education. Additionally, they have also messed up our reliable electricity and State Owned Entities. Today we don’t have a rail system. If we leave everything to them, they will continue damaging our country.

Many African countries failed because citizens watched politicians haemorrhage their economies and did nothing. Many Zimbabweans have left their native country and came to SA in search of a better life. No one is left there to defend the country from politicians who are looting what is left of the economy.

When the laws and bylaws are made, citizens don’t contribute. Later, they complain about the same laws. Christians are the majority in this country. Yet there are anti-Christian laws that have been passed right under their noses.

Citizens are ignorant of their role. They think it’s limited to voting. No, it goes beyond that. Part of their responsibility is to hold politicians accountable. They have abdicated their responsibility.

Politicians have proven that they don’t care about the masses. Therefore, the time for politicians to run this country is up. Citizens should reclaim their power back. Not only that, they should run this country, their country.
