With Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Zoom and a host of other social platforms, you would assume no one on Earth should ever feel alone. Recently the world’s population hit the 8 billion mark.
The song may be old but it is still true. The Beatles sang this song that is worth listening to again – Eleanor Rigby.
“Ah, look at all the lonely people.” “Where do they all come from?” “Where do they belong.” Our sports stadiums seat up to 100 000 people. Our malls crawl with people wondering around, many without a purpose.
Our suburbs filled with people living on top of each other.
Yet, in all of history, there has never been a greater feeling of loneliness than today. Some feel so lonely that life is not worth living. People go to church looking for love and walk away without making contact with another soul.
You and I cannot change the world, but we can bring a ray of light into a dark soul with a smile or act of kindness. They say, “No man is an island.” But in reality, we all feel like we are islands.
Today, with God’s help, we can build bridges. David writes in Psalm 25:16, “Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.”
The art to connect is something we must learn again.
