Race 6 in the Momentum Health Meg-3 National Duathlon saw husband-and-wife teams come out on top at Avianto in Muldersdrift during the last weekend of August.
The trophy cabinet at the Robertsons’ and Steyns’ homes must be slightly cramped after the Momentum Health Meg-3 National Duathlon Series, powered by PeptoPro.
While Riana Robertson became the 2013 Momentum Health Meg-3 National Duathlon Ladies Champion, husband Andy Robertson bagged the series win in the Male 40+ Category.
Finishing behind Robertson, Andrea Steyn found herself matched by hubby Wilhelm Steyn, who also finished the Men’s Open season in second place behind the indomitable Brand du Plessis.
Remaining untouchable as yearly winner of the series, Du Plessis put in a jaw-dropping performance on a course that many believed to the toughest of the season. His stunning performance was all the more remarkable against the background of his second place at the previous weekend’s World Mountain Biking Championships in Pietermaritzburg.
Would it be fair to say the the National Duathlon Series has played a central role in developing Du Plessis’ now formidable mountain biking skills? One thing is certain – it would take a real rising star to unseat this phenomenal athlete from the top spot on the podium.
In contrast, the women’s races have been closely contested this season down to the final event, with Lise Olivier managing to hold off Steyn in second and Robertson in third.
Avianto certainly passed the test as a regular feature on future duathlon schedules, combining Monte Carlo-style twists and turns for the mountain bikers and lovely up-and-down riverside running for the “joggers”.
Even Oom Neville, at more than 80 years old, finished the gruelling event with a smile, inspiring many a spectator to say “If Oom Neville can do this, then so can I!”.
“The year 2013 has seen a record in terms of entries,” says Momentum Health Marketing Manager, Karin Claassen.
“There is no doubt that we will continue to support and develop the sport of duathlon on both a family fun and competitive level. And look out for some enhancements flowing from participants’ suggestions, such as the inclusion of a trail running leg in 2014.”
One of the main sponsors – PeptoPro – said it would proudly continue its association with the prestigious event, having seen it reach new heights every year. The launch of its new PeptoSportflavour, Power Berry, changed many tired participant’s dusty face into a satisfied smile at the finish line.
“We are looking forward to next year with great anticipation, and the opportunity to keep bringing exciting new aspects into the series,” concludes PeptoPro Business Manager, Tennille Robertson.
