Sport star grabs future with both hands
Rich in talent; Krugersdorp boasts with a local woman who is a rugby and cricket star.
A local sports all rounder, Celeste Niehaus, met with the news on St Ursula’s sport field to chat about her recent claim to fame in radio and on the field.
Celeste had her 15 minutes of fame when she was interviewed on Radio Sonder Grense (RSG) late last year.
This talented sportswoman kicked off her sporting career early by representing the Highveld Loins Woman’s rugby team and later trading in the red socks for blue.
For the past two years Celeste has been running out for the Blue Bulls Woman’s rugby team as a hooker.
Before her rugby career, she played professional cricket for the Highveld Lions cricket team.
“I prefer rugby as it is a contact sport, and at bit more challenging to get the ball.”
After studying for six months at the University of Johannesburg, her studies were cut short when her heart sent her to Australia where she had the honour of competing in the World Cup Women Cricket Tournament.
Now she spends her days sharing her love for sport as a coach at St Ursula School in Krugerdorp North.
There she coaches athletics, swimming, hockey and soccer. And if St Ursula’s had a rugby team, she would most probably be the one coaching them too.
Celeste is also involved in the D2 hockey tournament, where she couches the under 12 team.
Her favorite sport to coach is hockey and to play, of coarse, is rugby.
In her spare time she enjoys spending quality time with her family and friends.
The news asked Celeste how she experienced the recent cricket phenomenon where AB de Villiers set a new world record, “If the Proteas can continue playing like this I predict a brilliant future in sport for South Africa”.
She told the news how excited she is for the Rugby World Cup later this year as well as the Cricket World Cup which starts next month.
