Rough stuff at 4X4 day
Anyone with a standard or slightly modified vehicle in that particular brand event can enter.
Averages Joes had the opportunity to test out their 4X4 vehicles at a recent off-road event hosted at Hobby Park.
The participants flocked to the 4X4 track venue for a day filled with mud-slinging action as 36 enthusiasts tried their luck on the dirt.
Organisers of the day, Brothers 4X4 is a 4X4 event company that hosts off-road events for standard and slightly modified 4X4 vehicles.
The company is run by the husband and wife team of Cornel and Sam Olivier who head up all the logistics.
The Brothers 4×4 Brand Cup is running with two events being hosted so far – the first being Jeep vs Toyota and second Ford vs Land Rover. The next event is on 28 March at Hobby Park where Nissan and Isuzu will be battling it out. The last challenge will be Suzuki vs VW followed by the semi-finals, then the finals and the announcing of the Brand Winner.
“Our aim is to create a family orientated sport. No one wants to head out into the sticks in the middle of nowhere. For us Hobby Park is central, and it caters for all our needs in terms of a safe, reliable and fully equipped venue. The track itself is also fairly standard, although we do modify the entry and exit points to the obstacles for our events. The overall facility is perfect for us,” said Sam.
Sam explained that the competition has two classes namely Standard and Modified.
“The Standard Class is a vehicle with absolutely no modifications to it (from the factory) and Modified is bigger tyres, different suspension and bumper changes. Each obstacle is worth 80 points and each class has its own entry and exit point. For each roll-back that the vehicle takes he loses 10 points, and for each banner that he hits he loses 20 points.
“The Standard Class vehicles are given the opportunity to do the Modified entry and exit for additional points, although the modified vehicles may not take the Standard Class entry or exit points. At the end of the day each driver’s score for each obstacle is tallied up and the driver with the most points wins.”
During the Jeep vs Toyota challenge, the following winners emerged:
• Standard Class: first – Stefan van Jaarsveld, second: Jan Pretorius, third: Leonard Jacobs
• Modified Class: first – Vickus Tromp, second: David Reynolds, third: Leon de Beer
• Sportsman of The Day went to Jan Pretorius for displaying the best sportsmanship in his vehicle and among his participants
• Balls for The Day went to Wian van Eyssen in his Ford Ranger, who never had done off-roading prior to this event, but who gave it everything he had on each obstacle.
“We are a family-based business, with family values and interests. Our aim is to encourage the average ‘Joe’ in his day to day standard 4X4 to participate in off-road events that will teach him how to handle his vehicle safely, learn the capabilities of his vehicle, and of course to have fun. We encourage a family orientated sport so everyone can be involved.”
Anyone with a standard or slightly modified vehicle in that particular brand event can enter. However, no pipe cars allowed.
