Karatekas make it to nationals
Students from a local dojo are preparing for an international tournament this year.
Ichi, ni, san and kick!
Karate, practiced all over the world, is a native Japanese martial art which is predominantly a striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open hand techniques.
Fifty-four karatekas (a person who practices karate) from a local dojo, Elmarie van Zyl Karate, were chosen to be part of the Japanese Shotokan Karate Assocciation (JSKA) national development team representing South Africa in Namibia this August.

Sensei Elmarie, practicing karate for over 25 years now, is proud of her dojo’s successes over the past few months.
“The dojo is affiliated with JSKA and Karate South Africa and the students are doing very well winning different medals in different tournaments.”
The dojo is filled with clinking medals and loud shouts as the karatekas practice their katas.
With victory still lingering in the air the 54 students, all of different ages, are preparing for the national development team and the international tournament this August.
