Young karatekas impressive medal count
Krugersdorp's Goju-Ryu Karate Club is the inter-club unison kata champions.
Krugersdorp’s Goju-Ryu Karate Club is the inter-club unison kata champions after a competitive match between four clubs.
The clubs from Klerksdorp, Randfontein, Krugersdorp and Noordheuwel are sister Goju-Ryu clubs. Goju-Ryu is a combination of hard and soft fighting techniques.
On 15 August, Sensei David Krause took about 10 of his young karatekas to participate in in the championship held by the International Shorei Martial Arts Academy and hosted by Sensei Izak Nienaber from Klerksdorp.
“All of them got a medal. So I am very satisfied and proud of my student’s performance,” Izak told the News.

This tournament, a first for the sister clubs, consisted of unison kata, individual kata and kumite, which is freestyle fighting. There was also a floating trophy for the clubs with the highest medal points.
Unfortunately, Klerksdorp beat Krugersdorp by three points and took home the trophy.
“There was a very high standard of karate from all four clubs,” Krause said.
“Next time, we will aim to win the trophy as well. Hard work always pays off with good results.”
