Judo stars rise from Krugersdorp

Three boys from a local judo club became local stars after bringing home some medals.

Eleven-year-old Morné Venter from Laerskool Kenmare recently won a silver medal at the New Jersey State Judo Championships held in the USA.

Morné, a student at the KJK Judo Club in Krugersdorp, was not the only boy who excelled with his judo skills recently.

Brothers Louis and Willem Truter were selected to represent South Africa at the Senior African Judo Kata Championships, held in Tunis, Tunisia earlier in April.

There they landed a third place in the competition with Tunisia taking a second place and Egypt taking the first place. They won the bronze medal for a kata which includes their groundwork and grappling techniques.

Two weeks later the brothers were also at the kata opening Ceremony of the Common Wealth Judo Championships held in Port Elizabeth.

“I am super proud of all the students of what they achieved on so many levels,” Katya Bruwer, who was selected to go along as National Kata Coach as well as Judge at the Senior African Judo Kata Championships.
