Locals shine at Judo Champs

Two local judo students selected as Commonwealth Champions in recent tournament.

Five local judo students from the Krugersdorp Judo Club walked away with a handful of medals at this year’s Commonwealth Judo Championships.

The Championships were held in Port Elizabeth in April, and saw judo students from all over the world participate in the tournament.

Eleven countries, including England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Mauritius, India, Guernsey, Mozambique, Botswana, Nigeria and South Africa, took part in the championships.

The competition included the Masters’ division for senior judoka aged 30 years and older, visually impaired judoka, pre-cadets (13–14 years), cadets (15–17 years) and juniors (18–20 years).

Eugene Delport participated in the Masters Men’s division of 90 kgs and ages 40–44 and walked away with a bronze medal.

Ferdinand van den Heever participated in the pre-cadet boys’ division and won a bronze medal, while Harm Venter took a bronze medal in the cadet boys’ division.

Dewald Schultz took gold in the pre-cadet boys’ division and was named as a Commonwealth Champion in his division.

Chris Pietersen was also named as a Commonwealth Champion after he took a gold medal in the cadet boys’ division.
