Cricket awards unify Azaadville

Azaadville Cricket Night League becomes a platform to showcase cultural diversity and unify a community.

It was a night of glamour and prestige as the Azaadville Cricket Night League held its awards ceremony at the Azaadville Cricket Stadium in September.

Some of the guests included Krugersdorp old boys, such as Aboo Varachia, Sulie Bhayat from the Azaadville Iqbal Kotwal, AH Nanabhay, Zain Nanachay and Aadil Asmal who represented five different generations in one room, each with a passion for telling a good cricket story.

“I was invited to witness the awards and I was bowled over as I witnessed unity in diversity at its best. The cultural diversity of players from various backgrounds such as Indians, Pakistanis, Bengalis and locals, including players from nearby Kagiso and Swanieville, created an ambience of jovial unity,” Shabier Dabhelia, the Ward councillor said.

Shabier also said the interaction between Mogale City Local Municipality and the community has greatly improved since the establishment of the Ward 3 sports council.

“The focus of the sports council is to ensure access to sporting infrastructure, and the development of sporting codes is a priority, especially with our younger generation,” Shabier told the News.

Dignitaries at the ceremony included Yusuf Gaffoor, who is the chairperson of the Ward 3 sports federation and Mogale City sports committee members.

“The participation of a few alumni in this gentlemen’s sport really enhanced an inclusive spirit, from which all team members benefit,” said Shabier.

Cricket games are played in the evenings, three times a week.
