Bodybuilders give power to the people

Jacqueline, who comes from humble beginnings herself, said that one of the most important things to have when growing up in difficult circumstances is hope. That’s why they donated equipment to Pango Camp’s boxers.

Local power couple Izak and Jacqueline Groenewald, who both won titles in this years’ International Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (IBFF) SA Championships felt the desire to give back to their community recently, and decided to donate some much-needed equipment to the young boxers of Pango Camp, Munsieville.

With a bakkie full of punching bags, weights and even boxing gloves they arrived at the camp which was buzzing with excitement.

The young boxers couldn’t ‘weight’ to off-load the equipment and start training.

Instead of just dropping the equipment and leaving the camp, both Izak and Jacqueline stayed to help with the boxers’ training.

Jacqueline held the little ones’ feet while they did sit ups and Izak showed the primary school children how to do a proper bicep curl with their new weights.

Jacqueline, who comes from humble beginnings herself, said that one of the most important things to have when growing up in difficult circumstances is hope.

“Training your body is beneficial to your health, but more importantly, the kids get a sense of belonging while working out with team-mates, and this shows them that there is more to life,” said Jacqueline.

Hugo van Niekerk, manager of Pango Camp, who is also one of the trainers at the boxing club thanked the couple for their generous donation and said this will benefit the boxers greatly.

“This contribution means that the boxers now have all they need to succeed,” said Hugo.

Hugo is also considering converting one of the empty plots into a boxing gym and asked anyone who can help the camp achieve this dream to contact him on 084 689 3356. Any equipment is also welcome.

After the fun training, the power couple handed out Smarties, crisps and cold drinks to the club’s children and then left to prepare for the IBFF World Championships in Italy, where they will be representing South Africa on 14 October.
