Arm Wrestling – the new gentleman’s game?

Linus Cornelius decided to pursue what he refers to as a gentleman's sport, aka arm wrestling

Approximately four-and-a-half years ago, a local athlete named Linus Cornelius decided to pursue what he refers to as a gentleman’s sport, also known as arm wrestling. Since then he has has opened his own arm wresting club, Primal Arm Wrestling, where he has served as coach since 2015.

“Since I was a kid at school, I’ve always liked to measure my power against others, but I didn’t make much of arm wrestling, as I wasn’t even aware of it as an accredited sport,” he explained.

“That was until a few years ago, when I heard that one of my friends was a professional arm wrestler. Needless to say, I decided to pursue the sport and have had quite a few teachers in the past four years.”

With his radical arm wrestling skills he also managed to obtain the position of secretary of the South African Arm Wrestling Federation (Sawf), which is affiliated with the World Arm Wrestling Federation.

Earlier this year Linus finished in sixth place in the open division at the Sawf Arnold Classic Arm Wrestling Challenge and won the trophy for the most upcoming novice.

His achievements for this year don’t stop there as he finished in fourth place in the Novice League which was held in Pretoria two months ago.

Linus explained that each competition is in preparation for the Arm Wrestling Nationals that will take place in Boksburg in November and will attract arm wrestlers from all over South Africa.

“I am going to compete in the Nationals with the aim of qualifying for World competition. It’s going to take some power, technique, balance and a lot of practice to get where I want to be, but I look forward to giving it my all,” he said.

Until then, Linus aims to rip as many 680-page telephone directories as possible in half to strengthen his wrists for the big ones.
