Monnas tennis star’s dream of being a champ well in reach

A young Monument learner is making name for herself in the tennis world.

Michelle Janse van Rensburg, 15, started playing tennis five years ago. The Monument High School learner said they were at their Vaal River house and it was a very cold and cloudy day. She saw a neighbour playing on the tennis courts outside and asked if she could join. After playing against Michelle, the woman told her mother to get her lessons because she was really good.

And that was the start of a promising tennis career.

Monnas’ tennis star Michelle Janse van Rensburg.

She has already been part of several achievements this year. At Monnas, she was part of the best doubles girls’ team, part of the team that won the Pretoria B-league competition, and voted best senior girls player and best mixed doubles team.

She was awarded her Gauteng Central colours in the U/19 age group when playing in the SA Schools Championships. She and her partner, Simona Georgieva, also won the gold medal for the doubles at the Tennis South Africa competition.

Michelle practises with her coach three times a week and plays social or league matches on Saturday. She also runs and does strength training in between.

According to her coach, Ed Murry, they are working towards playing in the Junior Federation Cup next year.
