Big smiles after three junior hockey teams received uniform shirts

These two Grade 12 learners show why they can coach with the best the West Rand has to offer.

Junior hockey coaches Alicia du Toit and Desiré Halgryn barely received their first homework assignments as matrics at Hoërskool Noordheuwel when they were already organising squad uniforms for the three teams under their capable wings this year.

The all-girls team Queen Bees and boys team Underdogs are made up of U/11 players, and all the mixed team players are U/9s. The team members are all from various primary schools on the West Rand and they aim to participate in this year’s West Rand Lions league.

NTT Volkswagen Krugersdorp has graciously sponsored uniform shirts for all the players in the three teams. Alicia, Desiré and Chantal Vorster, VW Krugersdorp’s Financial Manager handed out the shirts to each player while they gathered with their parents at the dealership’s showroom on Saturday, 12 January.

On the day the VW branch also announced that it would sponsor the registration fees of some of the players who wouldn’t be able to afford the amount themselves as they believe that everyone should have the opportunity to become a member of these teams.

The two coaches will focus on their three teams this year, but both are already looking forward to attending university next year.

Alicia said she plans to continue coaching, and hopes to play club hockey and progress to provincial level.
