Leading youngsters to win, succeed and be better athletes
The Pierre Blignaut Shot Put and Discus Academy recently assisted Laerskool Horison learners by training them to be fit and ready to compete and win a few medals for a provincial competition.
Noordheuwel — With the assistance of the Pierre Blignaut Shot Put and Discus Academy; the sky is the limit for young rising athletes.
Helping athletes to even greater heights is nothing new for the Krugersdorp-based academy with the recent achievements of numerous youngsters that are a testament to that.
The academy uses Hoërskool Noordheuwel’s sports field as their practice ground and teacher and shot put coach Anri Vermaas recently assisted some of Laerskool Horison learners. She trained them to be fit and ready to compete and win a few medals for the provincial competition as well as to qualify for Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) teams in order to compete on an inter-provincial championship level. These learners also fall under the academy.
Together the young athletes received a total of eight medals in discus, shot put and turbo javelin. Marni Vermaas (U13) received a gold in the discus with a distance of 37.12m as well as a bronze for shot put with a distance of 10.40m, her distance in discus was the second best distance in her age group this year.
Chanlee Landsberg (U13) brought back gold in shot put with a distance of 11.15m and a bronze for discus with a distance of 31.40m, Hanru Begemann (U13) secured two silver medals in shot put and discus, the shot put distance was 12.63m while the discus distance was a 36.34m.
Ruan Lottering (U10) secured a silver medal for shot put with a distance for 11.83m and Jani Vermaas U9 received a bronze for Turbo Javelin with a distance of 10.53m. While they have done considerably well, the young star athletes are waiting to find out whether they will be selected for the GCA teams.
