Paddler Daryn and team look to impress in marathon series

Paddler Daryn Koertzen from Krugersdorp and partners are among many preparing for the various marathon series events to come.

While South Africa’s canoe sprint teams are in Paris for the Olympic Games, back home the canoe marathon season in Gauteng is in full swing.

According to Gauteng Canoe Union (GCU) spokesperson Jennie Dallas, various top paddlers are also preparing for the International Canoe Federation (ICF) World Marathon Championships, taking place in Croatia in September.

Krugersdorp’s Daryn Koertzen is among the many talented paddlers currently training for the many long-distance river races in various parts of the country to come.

In his first marathon training race held at Centurion Canoe Club at Rietvallei Dam last month, Daryn partnered with Kevin Hunt and his son Jayden in a K3, finishing in one hour and 39 minutes.

The race at Rietvlei Dam included categories for K1 (single kayak), K2 (double kayak) as well as K3 (three-man kayak) with a long tough race which was 18km for the fit strong competitive paddlers, as well as a shorter 12km race for the newer, younger, or older and the less fit paddlers.
