A 494km walk for Dementia

After a month of walking to raise awareness for dementia, Valerie Dorffling shares her story.

For September, resident Valerie Dorffling decided to participate in the Run Against Dementia (RAD) movement and raised awareness by walking 15km every day. She also invited other residents to join her for the cause this past Dementia Awareness Month.

“Never in a million years did I think that a challenge to walk for dementia awareness would change my life so much, even if it was not on my bucket list,” she said.

During her walks, many people supported the cause.

“I walked all over town last month and had an amazing experience. I accepted this challenge with so much enthusiasm and it changed my life in many ways,” Valerie added.

She said on days 16 and 24, she dedicated her walks to her neighbour and dear friend who had been diagnosed with dementia.

“I have also received a message from the founders of RAD who congratulated me after 30 days of walking. In total, I managed a total of 494km and thus reached the platinum certificate of the RAD challenge. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this challenge possible for me. I enjoyed this journey to the end,” Valerie concluded.
