Man murdered after girlfriend is grabbed in the street

Police in Giyani have opened a case of murder following the death of a 29-year-old man over the weekend.

The victim, Xichavo N’wandzule from Homu-14B was apparently walking in the street with his girlfriend and five friends when a 25-year-old man approached them, grabbed the girlfriend, and forced her to walk with him to his place of residence. The deceased decided to follow the suspect to his house allegedly with the intention to rescue his girlfriend.

Upon arrival at the suspect’s house, a scuffle allegedly ensued resulting in the deceased being hit with a brick and then stabbed several times with a knife. Emergency services were summoned to the scene, however, the victim allegedly died instantly due to the severe injuries. A case of murder was later opened at the Giyani Police Station which traced and arrested the suspect a few hours later.

At the time of going to print on Monday, the suspect was still to appear before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court facing a charge of murder. Police spokesperson in Giyani, Sgt Ridgewell Rikhotso, said they still need to get information from the girlfriend. “We want to give her space to be able to process what happened without interference,” explained Rikhotso. “We can confirm that the girl was not raped,” he said.
