75 Mopani learners hospitalised after suspected food poisoning

Dzumeri Primary learners fall ill after meal and hospitalised, 11 remain for further observation with investigations underway.

LIMPOPO – The Limpopo Government is aware of the incident involving 75 learners from Dzumeri Primary School being rushed to Nkhensani Hospital in Giyani after reports of abdominal pain.

Provincial Government spokesperson Ndavhe Ramakuela says that the school acted swiftly and responsibly to ensure the safety of all learners. “While a few learners initially complained of abdominal discomfort, the principal decided to have the remaining students sent to the hospital for observation.”

Of the 75 learners observed at the hospital, 11 have remained for further observation and are currently in stable condition.

“We want to assure the community and all stakeholders that the health and safety of learners is government’s top priority,” says Ramakuela.

“In response to this incident, the Task Team established by the Provincial Executive Council a month ago is actively supporting all affected learners and their families. This team is also conducting a thorough investigation into the food consumed by the learners during the National School Nutrition Programme, as well as any other food sources that may have contributed to this situation.”

Parents and guardians are urged to remain calm and reach out to their respective school officials if there are any concerns or questions about their children’s health and safety.
