Baby found at Tzaneen taxi rank

Taxi operator discovers abandoned infant in Tzaneen taxi rank toilets, police seek information on mother's identity.

TZANEEN – The community of Tzaneen is shocked after the discovery of an infant at the toilets of the Tzaneen Crossing Taxi Rank on Thursday evening.

A taxi operator told the Herald that around 19:00, he heard a baby crying at the toilet and did not think much of it, as babies always cry.

“The baby started crying louder than before until I went in to see what was wrong. When I opened the door the baby stopped crying and then I walked away because it was dark. As I went away the baby started crying again until I switched on my torch to see where the baby was. I saw the baby put under the washing sink, picked her up, and called the police,” said Shoketso Leshabane.

The police then took the baby to Van Velden Hospital for a checkup. Wisani Tshuketana, communication officer at the hospital, confirmed that the baby girl is safe and well at the institution.

Police investigations are continuing; for more information on the baby’s mother, visit Tzaneen Police Station or call 0860 010 111.
